Sangam Era "Marungur Pattanam" Found near Ramnadapuram

Alagankulam

Alagankulam is a village situated on the east coast in Ramanathapuram Taluk and district. The village is situated on the banks of the river Vaigai and is about three kilometers away from the seashore. The most significant findings of the excavation are hundreds of potsherds of the Mediterranean region. They include  Rouletted ware and Amphorae jar pieces.  Pieces of Red ware with Tamil Brahmi letters have been found. They are assignable to the first century BCE. Other antiquities include beads, perforated tiles, and bricks in various levels. Three Roman coins were unearthed. They contain the figure of the head of the Roman Emperor on one side and the figure of goddess of  victory, holding a globe on the other side. The legend on them shows that the Roman Emperor Valentine II who ruled around 375 CE issued the coins.

அழகன் குளம் ஒரு வரலாற்றுப் பார்வை

தமிழகத்தின் பண்டைய துறைமுகங்களுள் ஒன்று அழகன் குளம் ஆகும்.இதுஇலங்கை நாட்டிற்கு வெகு அருகில் உள்ளது. இவ்வூர் துறைமுகத்தின்வழியாகத்தமிழர்கள் ரோமன் போன்ற பல வெளிநாடுகளுடன் வாணிகத்தொடர்புகொண்டிருந்துள்ளனர்.இங்கு வைகை ஆறு கடலுடன்கலக்கின்றது. அவ்வாறு கலக்கும் வைகைஆற்றுடன் கடலும் இணைந்துஏறக்குறைய ஒரு கிலோ மீட்டர் தூரம் வரை கடல்நீர் இவ்வூருக்குள்ஊடுறுவி வருகின்றது. இதன்முலம் வற்றாத உயிர் நதியாகஇவ்விடத்தில்வைகை ஆறு விளங்குகின்றது.

இயற்கையான துறைமுக அமைப்பைப் பெற்றிருக்கும் இந்த அழகன்குளம்தமிழகத்தின் பழைய துறைமுகங்களின் வரிசையில்குறிக்கத்தக்கதாக உள்ளது. மருங்கூர்ப்பட்டிணம் என்பது இதன் சங்ககாலப்பெயர் ஆகும். நற்றிணையில்இவ்வூர் பற்றிய குறிப்புகளைக்காணமுடிகின்றது.
இது அகழ்வாய்வுக் களமாகவும் விளங்குகின்றது. இங்குஅகழ்வாய்வுசெய்தபோது பழங்காலத் தமிழர்கள் பயன்படுத்தியமண்பானைகளின்சிறுபகுதிகளான ஓடுகள், மணிகள், வெளிநாட்டுக்காசுகள் போன்றனகிடைத்துள்ளன.பானை ஓடுகளில் தமிழில்எழுத்துக்கள் காணப்படுகின்றன. இவ்வகைஎழுத்துக்கள் முதல்நூற்றாண்டைச் சார்ந்தன என்று ஆராய்ச்சியாளர்கள்கருதுகின்றனர்.மேலும் வெளிநாட்டுப் பெண்களின் கைரேகைகள்முதலியனவும்தென்படுகின்றன. முன்று வெளிநாட்டுக் காசுகள்கிடைத்துள்ளன. இவை ரோமன்நாட்டைச் சார்ந்தனவாகும். இக்காசுகளின்ஒரு பக்கத்தில் வெற்றிக் கடவுளும், மறுபக்கத்தில் ரோமன் நாட்டின் அரசர்ஒருவரின் உருவமும் பொறிக்கப்பெற்றுள்ளன.
