Places of worship using `cone speakers' cannot take their own sweet time to do away with the devices, Madras high court has said, directing authorities to ensure full compliance of Supreme Court orders banning use of such high-decibel devices.By June 21 police and other authorities must ensure nil-violation of the apex court ruling, said the high court.

The first bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice M M Sundresh, while hearing a PIL filed by S Kumaravelu, who listed 44 places of worship widely using cone speakers, said government and police must strictly implement the July 18, 2005 of the Supreme Court prohibiting cone speakers in all public places, including places of worship. When advocate-general A L So mayaji said 18 out of the 44 specified places of worship had agreed to comply with the order, the judges said: “Part-compliance has taken place. Full compliance should be ensured by the next hearing. We make it clear that it is the question of enforcement of law, and not violators agreeing to take their own sweet time.Full compliance should be ensured by June 21, 2016.“
The bench said religious institutions believed the blessings could not be obtained unless there was loud noise.
