32-year-old Donna Price grew up with a happy childhood, but all that came crashing down almost three years ago when she found something out that she'd never expected: her parents were half-brother and sister, and she was part of an incestuous family without ever having known.
Speaking to The Sun about her ordeal, Donna recalled discovering the news back in 2014 after an estranged aunt contacted her about in on Facebook. "I felt sick and my stomach just dropped," Donna said of the moment she was told.
As it turned out, Donna's parents - who share the same biological mother - didn't meet until they were adults. The pair were unaware they were related when they met in a pub back in the 1980s and started a relationship, but after a year together during a family get-together, one of Donna's father's aunts told them.
"She kept looking at both of us. She said, 'you know something? You two are brother and sister'," Donna's father, Robin, told The Sun. Disbelieving her at first, the aunt insisted the couple were half brother and sister, and when they confronted their mother - who Robin didn't have a relationship with - she confirmed it was the truth.
By this point, however, the coupled felt too far down the road. They were in love, and decided to continue their relationship despite the fact it was incestuous. "Looking at it now, then yes, it was wrong," Robin said. "At the time, to us, that was it, we was happy, we didn’t give a monkey about what anybody else thought. [sic]"
All those years later, and after four children together, the couple's oldest daughter Donna would find out, however. And she would certainly give a monkeys about it. "There’s not enough words to describe how much I hate them," Donna told The Sun.
She was so furious, in fact, about the truth having been concealed, that she shopped her parents - who split in 1994 - in to the police. Her youngest brother, Steven, died at just seven-years-old, but had been born with severe epilepsy which may or may not have been linked to the fact his parents were related.
And to make matters worse, after a DNA test Donna discovered her dad wasn't actually her biological father; her mother had become pregnant with her as a result of an affair with an unknown man. So while this means Donna herself wasn't the product of an incestuous relationship, her three siblings were.
"How two people managed to manipulate and con people," Donna told The Sun. "How can you do that to anyone?"
Police charged her parents with incest and both pleaded guilty to the offence in court earlier this year. Her father was given a five months suspended sentence, while her mother was given three months suspended.
"It was horrendous and one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do," said Donna. "But I still would have done the same thing again."
