KANNUR: While the whole world observes International Yoga Day on Sunday, a matter of great pride for the man behind it — Prime Minister Narendra Modi — the cascade effect of such a turn of events could well be felt in the CPM strongholds, especially Kannur.
The Indian Martial Arts Academy and Yoga Study Centre at Peravoor, a CPM bastion near Irrity, has already announced the launch of yoga classes on Sunday. Interestingly, there had been speculations for long that the party had been planning to kickstart several activities including martial arts training and yoga classes for its cadre.
With the establishment of Red Volunteer Sena in the district on the lines of RSS, the yoga classes planned by Centre to begin in some of the Left strongholds have only increased its significance.
However, party leaders pointed out that the intention was not to emulate any other organisation but to help those who are suffering from diseases and other difficulties and also make the cadre strong both mentally and physically.
E Rajeevan, director of the centre, said block panchayat president K M Rajan would inaugurate the classes in Peravoor and they would spread classes across the district for the benefit of people at large.
“The centre is planning to extend the classes to areas including Thaliparamba, Pappinissery, Mayil, Mattannur, Alakode, Irrity, Thalassery and Kuthuparmba,” he added. Asserting that yoga was not linked to any religion, Rajeevan termed their new initiative as ‘secular yoga’ which anyone can practise.
