American Archbishop performing exorcism after racial protests

In October 2020, two American Roman Catholic archbishops performed public exorcism ceremonies in Portland, Oregon, and San Rafael, California, in response to racial justice protests. These ceremonies were specifically aimed at "cleansing" sites where protesters had toppled statues of the controversial 18th-century Spanish missionary Junipero Serra. 

Details of the Events:

• San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone conducted a short exorcism ceremony outside St. Raphael Catholic Church in San Rafael, California, where a statue of Father Junipero Serra was torn down by protesters. Cordileone stated the ceremony was intended to "drive out evil and defend the image of Serra". He performed the prayers in Latin, noting "Latin tends to be more effective against the devil because he doesn't like the language of the church".
• Portland Archbishop Alexander Sample led a procession of over 200 people to a city park, followed by a Latin exorcism rite, to "purge the community of evil" after more than four months of racial justice protests in the city. 

Context and Reaction:

These events occurred during a period of widespread racial justice protests following the murder of George Floyd, during which activists in several cities targeted and toppled statues of historical figures linked to racism, slavery, or the mistreatment of Indigenous peoples. 

The archbishops' actions drew criticism from some Indigenous activists and other commentators, who viewed the exorcisms as the church's way of casting legitimate Indigenous and Black-led protests as "demonic". Critics pointed out that Junipero Serra, while praised by the church for bringing Catholicism to the Western U.S., had a legacy that included forcing Native Americans to abandon their culture or face brutal punishment. 

Separately, another American priest, Father David Fulton from Nebraska, faced scrutiny after claiming he performed an exorcism at the U.S. Capitol building during the January 6, 2021, riot, though his archdiocese clarified he was not a trained exorcist and had misused his clerical position.
