St. Paul explicitly asks for financial support and donations in his authentic letters, but with a major distinction that is key to understanding his writings: he collected money for the poor in Jerusalem, while actively refusing to accept money or personal salaries for himself from most of the churches he founded.
Here is how Paul addresses money, donations, and financial support across his undisputed, authentic letters:
1. The Jerusalem Collection (Asking Donations for Others)
Paul spent years organizing a major relief fund—known to scholars as the Jerusalem Collection—gathered from Gentile churches in Galatia, Macedonia, and Achaia to support struggling Jewish Christians in Jerusalem.
1 Corinthians 16:1–4: Paul gives specific instructions on how to gather this systematic donation:
"Now concerning the collection for the saints: as I directed the churches of Galatia, so you also are to do. On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, as he may prosper, so that there will be no collecting when I come."
2 Corinthians 8–9: Paul devotes two full chapters to encouraging the Corinthians to fulfill their financial pledge for Jerusalem, appealing to their generosity, spiritual duty, and the principle of equality:
"Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." (2 Corinthians 9:7)
"Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality." (2 Corinthians 8:13)
Romans 15:25–28: Paul summarizes the theological reason for Gentile churches donating to Jerusalem:
"For Macedonia and Achaia have been pleased to make some contribution for the poor among the saints at Jerusalem. For they were pleased to do it, and indeed they owe it to them. For if the Gentiles have come to share in their spiritual bles
sings, they ought also to be of service to them in material blessings."
2. Paul's Stance on Donations for Himself
While Paul collected large sums for Jerusalem, his personal financial policy was strict and somewhat controversial among his contemporaries:
Refusing Financial Support (Self-Reliance): In 1 Corinthians 9:11–18 and 1 Thessalonians 2:9, Paul defends the right of apostles to receive financial support, but explicitly states that he chooses not to use this right so no one can accuse him of preaching for profit. He worked with his own hands (tentmaking/leatherworking) to support himself:
"We worked night and day in order not to be a burden to anyone while we preached the gospel of God to you." (1 Thessalonians 2:9)
The Single Exception (The Philippians): The letter to the Philippians is the only authentic letter where Paul acknowledges accepting financial gifts for his personal needs while in prison:
"Even in Thessalonica, you sent me help for my needs more than once. Not that I desire the gift, but I desire the fruit that increases to your credit... I am amply supplied, having received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent." (Philippians 4:16–18)
Summary of Paul's Practice
| Purpose | Paul's Approach | Primary Text |

| Personal Ministry / Salary | Refuses donations to remain independent and avoid accusations of greed. | 1 Cor 9:11–18, 1 Thess 2:9 |
| Personal Prison Support | Accepts aid solely from the church at Philippi as an act of partnership. | Phil 4:15–18 |
