CPM state committee on Thursday demanded the removal of Tripura gov ernor Tatha gata Roy for “instigating sedition and communal incitement“ through Twitter.Talking to reporters, CPM state secretary Bijan Dhar referred to a recent tweet by the governor in which he had written: “(Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder) Syama Prasad Mookerjee wrote in his diary on 10 11946: `The Hindu-Muslim problem won't b solved without a Civil War'. So much like Lincoln!“ Drawing President Pranab Mukherjee's attention to the tweet, Dhar demanded that Roy be removed from the governor's post and urged the higher judiciary to register a suo motu criminal case of sedition against him for his “attempt to break amity between Hindu and Muslims“.
“Being the custodian of the Constitution, Roy has to maintain the dignity of his post and he is duty-bound to protect the constitutional spirit of communal harmony , integrity and secularism of the country . Instead, Roy has been repeatedly playing the reverse role,“ Dhar said.
Dhar said on earlier occasions, too, Roy had posted `unwarranted' tweets against the Constitution. “We want him to be removed from the post and investigation must start against him,“ Dhar added. Roy clarified that he had merely tweeted Mookerjee's quote. “Instantly , a dozen dimwits began trolling me, saying I was advocating a civil war. No one stopped to ponder that I was quoting from a diary from prePartition India. I am not advocating anything. And it was prophetic because (Muhammad Ali) Jinnah unleashed that civil war seven months later,“ he said.
“I have tweeted the quote of Syama Prasad Mookerjee. If people do not understand, what can I do? Anyone can also demand my resignation; I have nothing to do in this regard,“ Roy added. The governor said he had quoted the line because of its prophetic nature.
