GCC Greater Chennai Corporation Toilet contract cancelled?

 The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) issued a pre-termination notice to a contractor for a toilet privatization contract in February 2024. The GCC cited substandard work, lack of improvements, and failure to meet key performance indicators. 

What happened
  • The GCC awarded a contract to DRRSB Infra to privatize 2,519 public toilets in a zone from February to August 2023. 
  • The contract cost Rs 430 crore for eight years, including Rs 82 crore to build new toilets. 
  • The GCC issued a pre-termination notice in February 2024. 
  • The GCC cited substandard work, lack of improvements, and failure to meet key performance indicators. 
  • The GCC released Rs 24 crore to the contractor. 
  • An RTI response in January 2025 showed the contractor only set up 37 CCTV cameras against the 372 required. 
Other issues with public toilets
  • Some public toilets in Chennai are not accessible, safe, and usable. 
  • Some toilets have been converted into paid toilets by individuals claiming to be affiliated with elected representatives.
