Being out of power is enriching for DMK, gets donations worth `109cr

Being out of power seems to be better for the DMK, which re ceives more in dona tions when it's sitting in the opposition benches. The party received `11.5 crore in donations between 2008-09 and 2010-11 when it was in power, but the amount jumped to `108.8 crore between 2011-12 and 2014-15 when it was out of power, going by data collated by Association of Democratic Reforms, a non-profit working for electoral reforms.
It was the party's Lok Sabha campaign that drew a large amount in donations. In 2013-14, DMK members and sympathisers poured in `80 crore, pushing up its overall donations during the period it was out of power in the state. That year, DMK received money for applications from nearly 1,000 members who wanted tickets. Most paid `20,000 per application.
Over the past five years, DMK has received `110 crore in donations. In comparison, its arch rival AIADMK declared just `4.2 crore as donations received over the past five years (2010 to 2015).
“We received donations as well as application money from our cadres in 2013-14 for the Lok Sabha elections. We record the names of donors and the amount along with their PAN number. The list we submitted to the Election Commission that year has the names of people who donated as little as `5,000 to the party,“ said DMK spokesman T K S Elangovan.
In 2014-15, the party published the names of donors in the party paper `Murasoli', he said. DMK's declared amount is also the highest among all state parties in the country.
While AIADMK takes all donations in cash and the details of sources and amounts are not complete, DMK collects most of its donations through bank transfers. Other parties like DMDK and PMK only take donations in cash.
For AIADMK, the main donor in the last five years was Anna Thozhir Sanga Peravai (the party's trade union wing), which donated `1 crore in 201314 and `2 crore in 2010-11. Chennai mayor Sadai Duraisamy is a major benefactor, having given `52 lakh in 2011-12. The party claims that it did not collect a single donation above `20,000 in 2012-13 and has not submitted returns for the year or for 2014-15.
“The official details of donations made to the party are available only with the finance department of the party and state finance minister O Panneerselvam. We have declared all that is mandatory to be disclosed. For a year (2012-13), when Amma was facing hardship (jail term), she did not meet anyone or receive any donations,“ said an AIADMK source said.
