A 35-year-old man allegedly killed 14 members of his family, including seven children, by slitting their throats before killing himself in Maharashtra’s Thane, police said on Sunday.
The accused, named Hasnain Warekar, may have sedated his parents, wife, sisters and others during dinner and killed them with a knife when they were asleep around 2am, police sources said.
The only person who survived, Warekar’s 22-year-old sister Sabiya, reportedly told police he was the culprit. She is undergoing treatment in a Thane hospital and police said they were yet to record her detailed statement as she was in a state of shock.
“Sabiya said that all of them were killed by Hasnain with a knife. After that, he hanged himself,” said V Chandan Shive, deputy commissioner of police, Thane. On preliminary examination, police found no traces of sedatives and have sent food samples for further analysis.
Warekar used to work at a private company in Navi Mumbai and lived in Kasarvadavli village at Ghodbunder Road in Thane. He had two children, whom he also killed.
A neighbour, 40-year-old Saleem Patel, said he heard Sabiya screaming and rushed to their house.
“We managed to pull Sabiya out from a window and rushed her to a private hospital and called the police. When police opened the door, we saw bodies lying in a pool of blood. Hasnain was found hanging,” he said.
Police are yet to ascertain the exact reason for the murders but are looking at family dispute being a possible trigger for the crime.
The Kasarvadavli police are in the process of filing a First Information Report and taking statements and collecting evidence from the scene of the crime.
Those who died: Warekar, his wife Jabeen (28), his daughter Mubatishira (6), his daughter Umera (3 months), his father Anwar (55), his mother Asagji (50), his sister Sabina (35), his niece Aanas (12), his niece Sadiya (16), his nephew Ali Hassan (5), his sister Batul (30), his sister Mariya (28), his nephew Umeer (7), his nephew Yusuf (4), his niece Arasiya (5 months).
