Finally showing some intent in the Pathankot terror strike, Pa kistan on Friday registered an FIR against the perpetrators of the attack that stalled talks be tween the two countries, on the basis of leads provided by India.Top Indian government sources said the FIR was regis tered a day after a meeting be tween Pakistan high commis sioner Abdul Basit and foreign secretary S Jaishankar. Basit called on Jaishankar on Thurs day for a meeting which saw the two top diplomats address the need to move ahead with the foreign secretary-level dia logue at the earliest.
Pakistan wants that dates for talks, which are meant to fi nalise the modalities for the comprehensive bilateral dia logue, be announced immedi ately . While official sources here said Pakistan could have registered the same FIR much earlier, they added that it was a “step forward“.
Indian officials also said that the fact that Maulana Masood Azhar wasn't named in the FIR wasn't relevant for the investigations. “It's not that there is any clinching evidence of his direct involvement in the attack and we have never spe cifically demanded his arrest,“ said an official. He added though, that India was hoping Pakistan will keep a check on his activities.
The FIR number 062016 was registered with provincial Counter-Terrorism Depart ment (CTD) of police in Guj ranwala, in Pakistan's central Punjab, by Aitzaz-ud-Din, a provincial deputy home secre tary , under sections 302, 324 and 109 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), and sections 7 and 21-I of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA). Section 302 of PPC deals with intentional and deliberate murder, while Section 324 is about an attempt to commit a murder.
Section 109 says that whoev er abets any offence shall be punished with the punishment provided for the offence.
Fresh trouble between India and Pakistan
New Delhi: Pakistan has alleged that its high commissioner Abdul Basit has been unable to visit an institute in Noida beca use of delay in approval by Indian authorities, leading to fresh strife between the two countries. Basit was scheduled to visit IIMT in Greater Noida to attend an international conference on `Latest Advances in Technology, Management and Applied Sciences'.
Pakistan sources said he couldn't go because ministry of external affairs delayed the approval required from the visit. “The event is being organised by the IIMT college which is taking place on Saturday morning where high commissioner of Pakistan Abdul Basit was addressing as a keynote speaker,“ said a source.
