JALANDHAR/AMRITSAR: Portuguese authorities on Friday turned down India's request for extraditing former member of banned terrorist organization Babbar Khalsa International Paramjeet Singh Pamma and have released him.

Portugal's minister of justice Frances Van Dunem rejected India's request for extraditing Pamma for his role in the killing of Rashtriya Sikh Sangat Punjab unit president Rulda Singh and in the bomb blasts in Punjab in 2009 and 2010.

Pamma's legal team and the UK-based Sikh Federation said Pamma was released following this order and was expected to be back with his family in UK soon.

Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) legal adviser Gurpatwant Singh Pannun who has been camping in Lisbon to coordinate legal assistance for Pamma, said, "Portugal recognized its obligation under UN Convention on Refugees."

Pamma was detained in Portugal based on warrants issued by India through Interpol.
