US Capitol on lockdown after shots fired; 1 held

The US Capitol was on lockdown on Monday after shots were apparently fired in the Capitol Visitors Center, police said, but local media said the gunman was injured and taken into custody . A police officer was apparently shot and wounded, a source said, adding the officer's wounds were not serious.Those at the Capitol were ordered to shelter in place.Congress was in recess on Monday for the Easter holiday , but it is a busy week for tourists in Washington.
“Shelter in place remains in effect as Capitol Police continue to investigate. Please stay in your assigned location,“ the Senate's Sergeantat-Arms, the body's chief law enforcement officer, said on Twitter.
Police cordoned off access to the Capitol building.An ambulance was at the scene. “There has been an isolated incident at the US Capitol. There is no active threat to the public,“ Washington police said on Twitter.
The White House, where thousands were attending the annual Easter Egg Roll, was briefly on lockdown as well, but the order was quickly lifted.
A US Capitol police officer, who asked not to be identified, said that the suspected shooter was being transported to hospital. The officer did not identify or describe the suspect and he added that there were no additional suspects.
Cathryn Leff a licensed therapist, tweeted that she was at the visitor's centre when she heard gunshots while going through a security check point. “That moment when it goes down. Everyone is screaming & running and you can't see where the #ShotsFired are from,“ tweeted Leff(@Cathrynlefflmft).
The Secret Service temporarily cleared tourists from an area surrounding the White House after the incident, but activities quickly went back to normal.
