Adam Purinton, a US Navy veteran accused of killing Indian aviation engineer Srinivas Kuchibhotla and injuring two others at a suburban Kansas City bar on February 22, has been charged with hate crime. If the charges are proved, Puritan faces a maximum penalty of death or life in prison.Earlier too, charges of murder and attempt to murder were slapped against 52year-old Purinton for killing Kuchibhotla and injuring Alok Madasani and Ian Grillot soon after the incident. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) too investigated the case to decide if it could be termed a hate crime.
The Justice Department on Saturday announced the indictment of Purinton by a federal grand jury for shooting three men, including the two Indian nationals.
Kuchibhotla's widow Sunayana Dumala expressed satisfaction at the indictment of Purinton. She said she had been updated by federal attorneys about the charges against the suspect. “Alt hough it's painful to hear as that reminds (me) of what he did to you, I'm happy at the speed with which things are moving and that we are one more step closer to justice being served and also help us in spreading our message against hate crimes,“ she said.“Missing you badly and I know you are watching everything,“ Sunayana said in an FB post on Saturday .
The announcement about the hate crime was made by acting assistant attorney general Thomas E. Wheeler, II, head of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division, and United States attorney Thomas E. Beall of the District of Kansas.
