An organisation of Indian Muslim women has heavily criticised a statement by the body of clerics known as Jamiat-Ulama-i-Hind (JUH) that Muslim personal law “flows from the Quran“ and therefore can't be scrutinised by the Supreme Court.
“In reality , there is no clash between the Quran and the Constitution when it comes to the concept of gender justice, but some elements in society are trying to present obstacles,“ said Zakia Soman of the Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan (BMMA), reacting to the Jamiat's stand. The women's organisation has more than 70,000 active members.
The stand of Muslim clerics has posed a serious challenge to Muslim women's fight for gender justice.BMMA last year had signed a petition titled `Muslim Women's Quest for Equality'. The petition was taken up by an SC bench of Chief Justice T S Thakur and justices A K Sikri and R Banumathi. The bench agreed to make JUH a party to the proceedings and sought a response from them, the attorney general and National Legal Services Authority.
