K. Kamaraj and Periyar E. V. Ramasamy shared a strong political alliance and mutual respect, despite their different ideological backgrounds.
Periyar strongly supported Kamaraj, actively campaigning for him during the crucial 1954 Gudiyatham by-election.
When Kamaraj later faced opposition from a DMK-Rajaji alliance in 1961, Periyar defended Kamaraj and urged Tamils to support him.
Kamaraj, in turn, implemented policies championed by the Dravidian movement, such as scrapping the controversial hereditary education scheme (Kula Kalvi Thittam) and heavily expanding education to marginalized communities.

K. Kamaraj opposed the imposition of Hindi in Tamil Nadu.
During his tenure as Chief Minister of Madras State (1954–1963), he carefully avoided the enforcement of Hindi.
Later, as a top Congress leader, he pushed the central government to honor assurances that Hindi would not be forced upon non-Hindi-speaking states.
