MUMBAI: A fire in one of the hostel dormitories at Smolensk State Medical Academy in Russia on Sunday morning tragically cut short the lives of two Indian girls—Pooja Kallur (22) and Karishma Bhosale (20)—as they slept. Pooja, from Navi Mumbai, and Karishma, from Sahakar Nagar in Pune, were in their fourth year of studying medicine in Smolensk.\

Pooja and Karishma shared the same room on the fourth floor of the six-storied hostel meant for Indian female students. It was around 11am in India on Sunday morning when the girls' parents received frenzied calls from families of the other students. "At first we thought there had been some fire crisis and called up the Indian advisor to the institute. That's when we came to know that two of the girls who were missing among those evacuated were Pooja and Karishma and that they had died," said Jogindra Singh, a family friend of Pooja's.

The Investigative Committee of Russia issued a statement on Sunday that read: "According to preliminary reports, ignition occurred at the fourth floor of the six-floor dormitory of the Smolensk State Medical University in the morning on February 14, 2016. Two students from India died in the fire. The investigators conducted a crime scene examination, assigned to fire-technical and forensic examination, interviewed witnesses."
