The debate on Parandur should not be reduced to a simplistic choice between “development” and “anti-development.”
The real question is this:
In an era of climate change, water scarcity, extreme heat, floods, and ecological collapse, can governments continue treating fertile agricultural land, lakes, wetlands and groundwater recharge zones as expendable?
Tamil Nadu is not a state lacking connectivity. We already have four international airports — Chennai International Airport, Coimbatore International Airport, Madurai International Airport and Tiruchirappalli International Airport. Very few states in India have such a spread of international airport infrastructure.
Together, Tamil Nadu’s airports already handle tens of millions of passengers annually, including several million international passengers. The issue before us is not whether Tamil Nadu is connected to the world. It clearly is.
What Tamil Nadu lacks today is not airports. What we lack is water security, climate resilience and protection of our natural resources.
It is also important to understand how air travel actually works in South India.
Large sections of western Tamil Nadu already use airports outside the state because of proximity and convenience. People from Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Erode and parts of Tiruppur often find Bengaluru more accessible than Chennai for international travel. Similarly, many travellers from Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode and Karur frequently use Kochi for international connections.
In the south, residents of Kanyakumari, Nagercoil and parts of Virudhunagar often prefer Thiruvananthapuram airport because it is geographically closer and more convenient.
This is not a failure of Tamil Nadu. It is simply how regional connectivity naturally functions. Airports serve regions, not political boundaries.
Therefore, the argument that every future increase in passenger traffic must be accommodated by sacrificing thousands of acres of fertile agricultural land, water bodies, wetlands and villages near Chennai deserves serious scrutiny.
Every acre of fertile farmland lost is gone forever.
Every lake filled up is a flood disaster waiting to happen.
Every wetland destroyed is groundwater storage permanently erased.
Every farmer displaced is a livelihood sacrificed.
The cost is not measured merely in compensation packages but in lost food security, disappearing villages and irreversible environmental damage.
We have already witnessed what happens when nature is ignored. Chennai floods. Reservoirs run dry. Temperatures rise. Groundwater falls. Cyclones become more intense. Farmers struggle with unpredictable rainfall.
Should we learn from these warnings or repeat the mistakes that created them?
Those asking “If not Parandur, where?” must first answer another question:
Can humanity survive without airports? Yes.
Can humanity survive without water? No.
Can Tamil Nadu survive without fertile agricultural land, lakes, wetlands and groundwater recharge systems? Absolutely not.
Economic growth is important. Infrastructure is important. But development that destroys the ecological systems sustaining human life is not development; it is deferred disaster.
The future will not judge governments by the number of runways they built.
It will judge them by whether they protected water, food, livelihoods and the environment when the warning signs were already visible.
The greatest infrastructure challenge before Tamil Nadu is not building one more airport.
It is ensuring that future generations still have water to drink, food to eat, farmers to cultivate the land and ecosystems capable of sustaining life.
