Chera's Capital Vanchi - Karur

குட புலம் காவலர் மருமான் ஒன்னார்
வட புல இமயத்து வாங்கு வில் பொறித்த
எழு உறழ் திணி தோள் இயல் தேர்க் குட்டுவன்
வருபுனல் வாயில் வஞ்சியும் வறிதே அதாஅன்று (47-50)

His shoulders are strong like the cross
bars on the gates of huge fortresses.
His land is rich with flowing streams
and his forts are secure with gates.
If you go to his Vanji city
what you get will be much less.

It is not only that,

திருமா வியன் நகர்க் கருவூர் முன் துறைத்
தெண் நீர் உயர் கரைக் குவைஇய
தண் ஆன்பொருநை மணலினும் பலவே.

many times, more than the sand on the shores of
Ān-porunai river with tall banks and clear waters,
in huge, prosperous Karuvūr town belonging to
Chēran owning tall chariots and fierce, arrogant
elephants with striped foreheads, strong as death,
with musth flowing into their trumpeting mouths,
with fierce, huge, curled trunks, that throw
men to the
ground,killing them without missing their marks.

நெடுந் தேர்க் கோதை திருமா – wealthy Chēran king with tall chariots, வியன் நகர்க் கருவூர் – wide town of Karuv ūr, முன் துறை – front/main port, தெண் நீர் – clear water,  உயர் கரைக் குவைஇய – heaped on the high shores,  தண் ஆன்பொருநை மணலினும் பலவே – more than the sands of Ānporunai River

Karur or Vanchi on the Banks of Porunai River is the capital of Cheras.

LATER CHERAS Lost Kongunadu, and moved to Cranganore or Kodungallur in 9th century, Kodungallur was under sea till 9th Century.

The New capital was called Thiruvanchikalam - which reminds Karur's earlier name Vanchi.

In 1969-70 ASI Excavations said that Thiruvanchikalam and Kodungallur  and surroundings  was first occupied in 9th century only, virgin soil below it.
