NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo Orders Compensation to Nursery Kid Assaulted for Saying 'Radhe Radhe' at Missionary School after Rashtra Jyoti's Complaint
In a significant order dated 18 March 2026, the National Human Rights Commission has directed the Government of Chhattisgarh to pay Rs 50,000 as compensation to a nursery student who was beaten up by the school principal for greeting her with “Radhe Radhe”.
The school, Mother Teresa English Medium School located in Bagdhar, is a missionary-run school while the child belongs to the Hindu community. The principal is named Ila Evan Colvin.
The order was passed by the bench of NHRC Member Priyank Kanoongo (), who took cognizance of a complaint filed by Rashtra Jyoti ().
The order states that the Chhattisgarh government is free to recover the compensation amount from the school.
The matter dates back to August 2025 when the child, who is just 3.5 years old, was beaten on her arm and had her mouth taped for 15 minutes by Colvin, after the child greeted her with ‘Radhe Radhe’ as per the culture in her house.
After the incident came to light, Rashtra Jyoti filed a complaint with NHRC, stressing the need for an impartial investigation and justice. The complaint flagged issues of child abuse, religious discrimination and institutional impunity.
Priyank Kanoongo, member of NHRC, took cognizance of the complaint and issued a notice under Section 12 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 to the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police, Durg, after finding prima facie “serious violations of the human rights of the victim and the provisions of the RTE Act, 2009”.
Now, after several exchanges with the Durg administration, the Commission ordered compensation for the victim.
Meanwhile, Sewa Nyaya Utthan (), has helped the girl’s parents pull her out of that school and enrol her in a new school of their choice. Next month, the girl enters KG.
