Catholic church in Germany apologizes for executing hundreds of ‘witches’

A Catholic diocese in Germany apologized this week for torturing and executing 400 people suspected of being witches between the 1400s and 1700s. 

 

According to the Times of London, Catholic diocese in Eichstätt, a city in southern Germany, burned hundreds of people, mostly women. It is the latest diocese in a decade-long campaign by German pastors to apologize for more than 25,000 executions of people accused of consorting with the devil in the country during that time. According to historians, the accused were people who turned away from Catholicism toward Protestantism. 

  The church also seized assets of many of the people it executed, leaving their families penniless and destitute.

 

Bishop Gregor Maria Hanke called the executions, often done after forcing confessions through brutal methods, a “bleeding wound” on the church’s history.

The apology doesn’t go far enough, according to at least one critic. “Women were tortured 12, 13 times until they confessed to the nonsense the interrogators cooked up in their perverted brains,” artist Wolfram Kastner told The Times. “They and their families were robbed of all their assets.

“It should be a matter of course after all these centuries to name and rehabilitate all the victims,” he continued. “But they’re not ready to do that yet.”
