கலப்பு திருமணம் கிறிஸ்தவ மத நம்பிக்கைகளுக்கு எதிரானது, அதை எதிர்க்க வேண்டும் என்று இடுக்கி மறை மாவட்ட கத்தோலிக்க பிஷப் மேத்யூ அனிகுழிக்கட்டில் பேசியது சர்ச்சையை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளது.

கேரளா மாநிலம் கோட்டயம் அருகே உள்ள காஞ்சிரப்பள்ளி பகுதி சார்பில் மதபோதகர்கள் சந்திப்பு நிகழ்ச்சி நடந்தது. இந்த நிகழ்ச்சி இடுக்கி மாவட்ட பிஷப், மேத்யூ அனிகுழிக்கட்டில் என்பவர் தலைமையில் நடைபெற்றது.

கூட்டத்தில் கலந்து கொண்டு பேசியபோது, “சமீபகாலமாக கிறிஸ்தவ மதத்தில் கலப்பு திருமணங்கள் அதிகரித்து வருகின்றன. பிற மதத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவர்கள் கிறிஸ்தவ பெண்களை திருமணம் செய்து, அவர்களை தங்களது மதத்தில் இணைத்துக் கொள்கின்றனர். இது கிறிஸ்தவ மதத்திற்கு மிகவும் ஆபத்தாகும்.

ஒரு பகுதியில் 100 திருமணங்கள் நடந்தால், அதில் குறைந்தது 6 திருமணங்கள் கலப்பு திருமணங்களாக இருக்கின்றன. கலப்பு திருமணத்தை அரசு ஊக்குவித்தாலும் நாம் அதை கடுமையாக எதிர்க்க வேண்டும். கலப்பு திருமணம் கிறிஸ்தவ மத நம்பிக்கைகளுக்கு எதிரானதாகும்.

சில பெண்கள் 18 வயது வரை சிரமப்பட்டு வளர்க்கும் பெற்றோரையும், மதத்தையும் உதறிவிட்டு சில நாட்களே பழக்கமான ஒருவருடன் எந்தவித மன உறுத்தலும் இல்லாமல் ஓடிவிடுகின்றனர். பணத்தாசை தான் இந்த தீய செயல்களுக்கு முக்கிய காரணமாகும்” என்று கூறியுள்ளார்.

இவ்வாறு அவர் பேசினார். இடுக்கி மாவட்ட பிஷப்பின் இந்த பேச்சு கேரளாவில் சர்ச்சையை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளது.

Inter-faith marriages are against Christian values, declares Idukki bishop

The statement of a senior bishop of Kerala that inter-faith marriages are against Christianity and some sections of the society have a hidden agenda to entice Christian girls has kicked off controversy.

Idukki Bishop Mar Mathew Annikkuzhikkattil had made this remark while inaugurating the pastoral council meeting of Kanjirappally diocese (Kottayam district) on Saturday. Many organizations have come out against the controversial remark and sought action against him.

“Inter-caste and faith marriages will spoil the purity and characteristics of Christianity. Though the government promotes such marriages we should discourage such tendencies,” the bishop said.  He also alleged that unmarried Christian girls were enticed and forced to marriages by ‘love jihadist’ and people belonging to the SNDP.

Angry SNDP (a social outfit of Ezhava community) workers took out a procession before the state secretariat on Sunday demanding the bishop’s immediate arrest for his remarks which they claimed vitiated the communal harmony of the state.

The bishop, known for his off-the-cuff remarks, said six out of every 100 marriages were inter-faith and that was the main reason behind growing number of divorce cases.

“At least 5,000 divorces took place in the state last year. It seems our community is fast attracted to the western model,” he said. Though he made his statement at a religious congregation it was widely reported in the state inviting enough barbs.

SNDP (Sree Narayan Dharma Paripalana Yogam) general secretary Vellapally Natesan has sought the arrest of the bishop. “He’s spewing venom. The government should book him immediately on charges of vitiating communal fabric of the state,” the SNDP general secretary  said.

Meanwhile, as the issue snowballed into a big controversy Kerala Catholic Bishop Council (KCBC), an apex body of Catholic priests, expressed regrets over the remarks of the Idukki Bishop. “We deeply regret if the bishop’s remarks hurt anyone,”  KCBC said in a brief statement in Kochi.
