Guwahati: Assam’s giant killer, former Congress minister Rakibul Hussain, on Tuesday annihilated Muslim population’s strongman and billionaire perfume baron Badruddin Ajmal in Dhubri with the highest winning margin in the country, 10,12,476 to be precise.Hussain in the process toppled Ajmal’s applecart denying him a fourth straight term in the Lok Sabha. Ajmal’s AIUDF also lost the other two seats — Nagaon which was retained by Pradyut Bordoloi of Congress and Karimganj — which returned BJP’s Kripanath Mallah for the second successive term to Lok Sabha.“Sometimes on the road our vehicle goes ahead of others and sometimes we fall behind. That’s life,” Ajmal said about his defeat.With Hussain’s victory, Congress wrested Dhubri from AIUDF after a 15-year gap. The seat was in the grasp of Congress from 1971 until Ajaml snatched it in 2009, four years after the party was formed.In the run-up to the elections, Ajmal had claimed that Congress will be routed in Dhubri and he would win by a margin of eight to nine lakh votes and retain the seat.The Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency where the migrant Muslim voters have been brought together by the delimitation exercise, pushing up the percentage of minority voters to about 85% now, has become a matter of prestige for sitting MP and AIUDF supremo Badruddin Ajmal, who is seeking a re-election for the fourth consecutive term.
He will be up against Congress’s Rakibul Hussain and AGP’s Zabed Isam.An AIUDF leader said that anti-incumbency might have worked against Ajmal as he has been an MP from Dhubri since 2009. “But he played a major role for the welfare of minorities and his clean image. The reopening of railway lines, ferry ghat and airport for the people of Dhubri, inauguration of Dhubri Medical College, besides starting of the work of Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge, are his major achievements as an MP,” he added.Riding on the anti-incumbency wave, Congress fielded Hussain, the party’s Samaguri MLA, to regain its lost bastion, Dhubri. Being the tallest leader in the state Congress from the minority community, Hussain was the right heavyweight candidate against a sitting MP of Ajmal’s stature.Senior party leaders said the local ticket aspirants and some of the Congress MLAs were in favour of fielding a nominee who hails from Dhubri. But the party had to field Hussain considering his vast experience in electoral politics and stature as the tallest minority leader.Hussain, the deputy leader of the Congress legislature party in the state, polled 14,71,885 votes, gobbling up an impressive 59.99% of the vote share in the constituency, which has the highest number of voters in the state. Dhubri has a majority Muslim population, with around 85% of voters belonging to the Muslim community.In contrast, Ajmal could garner just 4,59,409 votes, equal to 18.72% of the total votes polled. NDA constituent Asom Gana Parishad (AGP)’s Zabed Islam secured third place with 4,38,594 votes.A total of 13 candidates were in the fray in the constituency, located along the India-Bangladesh border.The recent delimitation exercise in Assam significantly altered the electoral landscape of Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency.
