This scholarly publication traces the emergence of the Marian cult between 150 and 450 CE. Shoemaker dives deep into early liturgy and apocrypha to trace the emergence of the Marian cult and its centrality to the growth of early Christianity.
4. The Jesus Dynasty: The Hidden History of Jesus, His Royal Family, and the Birth of Christianity by Prof. James Tabor
In this book, Tabor draws upon all available New Testament anthologies, texts that were deemed apocryphal but were even more ancient than the gospels, early church history by Eusebius to trace all narratives pertaining to Mary. He then makes a compelling case that there were no two Marys as the Christian tradition would have us believe. There was only one Mary, who had been married twice, first to Joseph and then to Clophas. She had at least seven children.
5. Toledot Yeshu (The Life Story of Jesus) Revisited by Prof. Yaacov Deutsch, Prof. Michael Meerson, and Prof. Peter Schäfer
These esteemed scholars collected over 500 manuscripts of Toledot Yeshu to arrive at this critical edition. Toledot Yeshu is a Jewish polemical text which is at least as old as the compiled New Testament. It casts Mary in a new light. Mary is betrothed to a rabbi. However, one day, he catches her in a compromising position in bed with a Roman legionnaire. Shocked, he calls off the betrothal. The name of the legionnaire is given as Pantera in some manuscripts and there is a tombstone of one Pantera from the same period. His full name, according to the tombstone, was Tiberius Julius Abdes Pantera. Interestingly, this story of Mary is set in the reign of Alexander Jannaeus (103-76 BCE), long before Jesus was even born - more on this paradox in a subsequent podcast of this 8-part series. Early church was aware of this story. Origen, a very important and early church father, was aware of this story. It had been told in great detail by the philosopher Celsus, whose book the church has destroyed. However, Origen quotes from it at length in his Contra Celsum, Chapter 32, in which he recounts this story. In this story, as told by Celsus and cited by Origen, Mary was guilty of adultery, and bore a child through the Roman legionnaire Pantera.
6. Twenty Three Years: A Study of the Prophetic Career of Mohammad by Ali Dashti translated by F. R. C. Bagley
Ali Dashti was a great Iranian scholar who was killed for his honest and scholarly views. In this thought-provoking book, he cites an important Quranic tafsir which states that the Virgin Mary might end up as the wife of Prophet Muhammad! Of course, this is anachronistic but what is Abrahamic faith without irrationality and anachronism?
