CSITA properties Worth Thousands of Crores being Illegally Alienated through Synod Paralysis?

Is the current power vacuum at the Synod deliberately engineered to hastily strip the CSI of some of its most valuable properties held by the CSI Trust Association (CSITA)? This question becomes relevant in the light of some potentially high value property transactions that have emerged. None of them involve outright sale. But the terms under which properties are being leased out to politically influential persons and with little transparency will almost certainly result in their loss to the church.  https://www.facebook.com/groups/2833924983556597/posts/4453072601641819/

In his treasurer’s report read out by him at the 2023 Hubli Synod, CSI Synod and CSITA Treasurer Vimal Sukumar had declared (Pg 8 of report) that “CSITA took a blanket decision to ban any sale of CSITA Properties.” But such a ban is borne out of legal necessity and is little more than a smokescreen to alienate valuable properties through long term leases that could make them irrecoverable.

In 2011 the Supreme Court in Suraj Lamps & Industries Vs State of Haryana ruled that selling properties using the power of attorney route (as was the case with CSITA property sales in the past) does not amount to transfer of title and banned the practice. But there is no such restriction on long term leases, often for an initial 21 years, using the PoA route and containing highly one-sided renewable clauses in favour of the lessee. These would effectively mean permanent alienation of priceless CSITA properties inherited by the church from foreign missionary organisations.

Well placed sources say that officials in the Karnataka Central Diocese (KCD) have in the last few days initiated leasing out of a highly valuable property on prime Lalbagh Road to a powerful Jain businessman. The gentleman runs one of the city’s biggest educational establishments located a few hundred metres away from the CSITA-owned property.

The erstwhile Fuller Hostel was pulled down and has been existing in shell form (see photo) for several years after the more than decade-long KCD effort to develop the property and lease it out to a hotelier came acropper. This due to gross mismanagement and corruption. The KCD had to pay the hotelier over Rs 11 crore, nearly three times what he had invested, as per an arbitration decision approved by the Karnataka High Court. No one in KCD was ever held accountable for this huge financial fiasco.

It is unclear if a registered lease deed which is mandatory for leases 12 months or longer has been executed for the latest lease and who the signatories are on behalf of the KCD/CSITA. The KCD Treasurer Solomon Raju is also a director of CSITA. And Vinod Dasan -- Synod Executive Committee member from the diocese and a close confidante of the Synod Officers -- was made a member of the company at the sham election of CSITA members (see video here https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1F7xqf5cBU/ ) held during the Hubli Synod. Interestingly, as reported in my last post, there are legitimate grounds to believe the current CSITA PoA in use by KCD officials, and which should be used in any registration, is no longer valid under law.

Meanwhile, it is understood the Madras diocese-administered Kalyani Hospital located in the heart of Chennai at Dr Radhakrishnan Salai has also been leased out. Arun Samuel, Managing Director of the Bengaluru based Wings announced on January 10, 2026 his organization had taken over the century old Kalyani Hospital. He was speaking at the Fishers Conclave – a Christian businessmen network -- held at Chennai (see pic).

As per information filed with the Registrar of Companies, Samuel’s flagship Wings Brand Activations India Pvt Ltd had consolidated revenues of Rs 161.39 crores as of year ended March 31, 2025. But in public statements Samuel, a self made businessman with humble beginnings as a water purifier salesman, has claimed revenues of around Rs 1500 crores. He also reportedly owns a private jet which has been used by prominent church leaders (see pic) and politicians from time to time.

Samuel, according to one of the participants present at the Chennai meeting, said his group’s deal on Kalyani was part of a wider plan he has to take over mission hospitals. Wings already runs the Methodist-owned ETCM Hospital at Kolar and there have been reports it is interested in the sprawling CSI hospital at Bengaluru, a property potentially worth well over Rs 1000 crores.

One should not have any problem with genuine efforts to revive mission hospitals which are badly in need of investment and better management. But the concern is about the lack of transparency surrounding the terms under which such deals, on what constitutes properties of a public religious charitable trust serving millions of CSI members, are being done. This particularly as the underlying property value is often enormous and monetizing the same could be the main attraction for lessees.

Will the relatively new Madras Bishop Paul Francis Ravichandran (seen in pic receiving a gift hamper from Mr Samuel) put out a statement disclosing details of the Kalyani Hospital transaction? That will be the true test of his reformist credentials which some members from his diocese have been attributing to him. Similarly will KCD Bishop Vincent Vinod Kumar disclose the latest on the Fuller Hostel deal and why, if true, this has been struck with a non-Christian businessmen? Is it also true that a Rs 2 crore advance has been taken by the diocese towards leasing out of this property?

Both the Bengaluru and Chennai property deals come on the heels of the one involving the 42-acre CSI Hospital property at Dichpally. CSITA directors recently met in Hyderabad (see photo) and reports say they are seeking a Rs 5 crore infusion from CSITA towards the hospital. Why should CSITA invest in this hospital if it has already been leased to a private firm? Or is the money needed to return what was illegally taken as a kickback now that the deal seems to have collapsed and the hospital has returned to its two decades-old moribund state? Will CSI Synod and CSITA treasurer (who is also Medak diocese treasurer) Vimal Sukumar care to clarify?

That CSITA is in a complete state of paralysis is evident from the September 2025 filing (see attached) made with the Registrar of Companies and signed by CSITA director Solomon Raju. The filing talks of “regulatory compliance challenges” faced by the company and seeks extension of three months till December 31, 2025 to finalise its audited accounts and hold the AGM. The AGM along with passing of accounts for FY 24-25 should have happened by September 30, 2025 and there is no information on the MCA website that this happened even by end December.

It is high time concerned CSI members take up this matter with the RoC/NCLAT as a matter of priority particularly in the light of the illegal lease deals that are being put through in a hurry. There are already several other such ongoing dubious deals involving CSITA properties including the one of the highly prized No 4 MG road in Bengaluru where the diocese/CSITA authorities seem hand in glove with those trying to illegally grab them. Suspension of the CSITA board of directors and appointment of an administrator seems to be the only immediate feasible solution to prevent prime CSITA property from being lost to the church.

Meanwhile, the Telangana High Court is slated to hear tomorrow January 29 the reply of the CSI Moderator and the Synod. This to the case seeking a postponement to next year the holding of the General Synod that was due this month. See my Jan 14, 2026 post on this page “Holding of New Synod blocked by Order of Telangana High Court.” The court, which has no jurisdiction under the CSI Constitution to hear the matter, has yet to admit the matter. But it has given a maintain status quo order (which technically has kept the Synod Officers and the Synod administration itself in office) valid till tomorrow.

It will be interesting to see what reply the Moderator/General Secretary provides the Telangana High Court. Whether they point out the court’s lack of jurisdiction and seek dismissal of the case, which is the key issue on which the litigation rests, will be keenly watched.

சமீபத்தில் Facebook இல் உள்ள "Corruption Free CSI" என்ற குழுவில் (குழு ID: 2833924983556597) வெளியான ஒரு பதிவு பெரும் கவனத்தை ஈர்த்துள்ளது. பதிவின் ID: 4453072601641819. இந்த பதிவு Church of South India Trust Association (CSITA) – அதாவது தென்னிந்திய திருச்சபை அறக்கட்டளை சொத்துகள் தொடர்பான கடுமையான குற்றச்சாட்டுகளை முன்வைக்கிறது.

பதிவின் மையக் கேள்வி: "Are CSITA properties Worth Thousands of Crores being Illegally Alienated through Synod Paralysis?" (ஆயிரக்கணக்கான கோடி மதிப்புள்ள CSITA சொத்துகள் சினோட் முடக்கத்தால் சட்டவிரோதமாக அந்நியப்படுத்தப்படுகின்றனவா?)

இந்த பதிவு சி.எஸ்.ஐ. சினோட் (CSI Synod) இல் தற்போது நிலவும் பதவி வெற்றிடம் (power vacuum) அல்லது நிர்வாக முடக்கம் (Synod Paralysis) காரணமாக, CSITA-வின் மிகப்பெரிய சொத்துகள் சட்டவிரோதமாக விற்கப்படுவதாகவோ அல்லது இழந்து போவதாகவோ குற்றம் சாட்டுகிறது.

CSITA என்றால் என்ன? ஏன் இவ்வளவு மதிப்பு?

• CSITA (Church of South India Trust Association) – தென்னிந்திய திருச்சபையின் (CSI) அறக்கட்டளை அமைப்பு.
• இது CSI-யின் அனைத்து சொத்துகளையும் (நிலங்கள், கட்டிடங்கள், பள்ளிகள், மருத்துவமனைகள், விடுதிகள் போன்றவை) நிர்வாகம் செய்கிறது.
• CSI தென்னிந்தியாவில் 8 மில்லியன்+ உறுப்பினர்களைக் கொண்ட பெரிய திருச்சபை. அதன் சொத்துகள் ஆயிரக்கணக்கான கோடி மதிப்புடையவை என்று மதிப்பிடப்படுகிறது (நகர்ப்புற நிலங்கள், வணிக இடங்கள் உட்பட).
• இந்த சொத்துகள் பொது நம்பிக்கை சொத்துகள் (public charitable trust) – திருச்சபை பணிகளுக்காகவே பயன்படுத்தப்பட வேண்டும்.

• இந்த Facebook குழு CSI-யின் பல்வேறு டயோசிஸ்களைச் சேர்ந்த உறுப்பினர்களால் நடத்தப்படுகிறது.
• நோக்கம்: CSI திருச்சபையில் ஊழலை ஒழிப்பது, அரசியல் தலையீடு இல்லாத நிர்வாகம், அரசியலமைப்பு பாதுகாப்பு.
• குழுவில் பல பதிவுகள்: சினோட் தேர்தல் சர்ச்சைகள், பிஷப் தேர்வு, சொத்து விற்பனை வழக்குகள், Madras High Court உத்தரவுகள் போன்றவை.
• சமீப காலத்தில் CSI சினோட் தொடர்பான பல PIL-கள், CBI விசாரணைகள் (எ.கா. Tallakulam நில வழக்கு) நடைபெறுகின்றன.

ஏன் இது தமிழ்நாட்டுக்கு முக்கியம்?

• CSI-யின் பெரும்பாலான டயோசிஸ்கள் தமிழ்நாட்டில் உள்ளன (மதுரை-ராமநாதபுரம், திருநெல்வேலி, சென்னை போன்றவை).
• சொத்து இழப்பு → திருச்சபை பள்ளிகள், மருத்துவமனைகள், ஏழைகளுக்கான உதவிகள் பாதிக்கப்படும்.
• மதுரை உயர் நீதிமன்றத்தில் CSI தொடர்பான பல வழக்குகள் (ஆக்கிரமிப்பு, சொத்து விற்பனை) நடைபெறுகின்றன.
• இது மத நிறுவனங்களின் நிர்வாக வெளிப்படைத்தன்மை குறித்த பெரிய விவாதத்தை தூண்டுகிறது.

முடிவுரை

இந்த Facebook பதிவு வெறும் ஒரு கேள்வி அல்ல – CSI திருச்சபையின் எதிர்காலத்தை பாதிக்கும் சொத்து பாதுகாப்பு பிரச்சினையை எடுத்துக்காட்டுகிறது. சினோட் முடக்கம் உண்மையில் இருந்தால், உடனடி நடவடிக்கை தேவை. உறுப்பினர்கள், நீதிமன்றங்கள், அரசு – அனைவரும் இணைந்து CSI-யின் சொத்துகளை பாதுகாக்க வேண்டும்.
