The newly converted Islam fishermen’s renaming of the village has irked the Roman Catholic fishermen in Kombuthurai, they added.
While some claim that ‘Kadaiya’ is the old name of the Kombuthurai hamlet, a case in this regard is pending in the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court. Recently, Anthony Frango alias Mohammed Frango (29), Jebastian alias Esa (32), and Wilfred alias Salim had embraced Islam. Salim had embraced Islam a decade ago and was forced to move out of the hamlet. The trio complained to the collector and tahsildar that the Kombuthurai fishermen association had stopped them from fishing and auctioning their catch at Kombuthurai beach, which the Christians refuted.
One of the converts told TNIE that the fishermen have restricted them from fishing activities for the past four months and that they have been supporting their families by working as fisher coolies. “They stopped providing the tractors belonging to the Kombuthurai fishermen welfare association, to push the boat into the sea. So the neighbouring Iykiya Muslim Peravai contributed one tractor for the trio. However, the local fishermen prevented them from using it,” he said.
A former village head of Kombuthurai told TNIE that they have not stopped the trio from carrying out fishing activities, but only voiced their objection to using the name ‘Kadayakudi’ for the hamlet since the matter is subjudice. Meanwhile, the district administration has arranged another peace meeting on October 3 to dissolve the issue between the converts and the village leaders and Christian fishers.

இந்நிலையில் சமீபத்தில் கிறிஸ்துவ சமூகத்தை சேர்ந்த அந்தோணி பிராங்கோ என்ற முகமது பிராங்கோ (29), ஜெபாஸ்டியன் என்ற ஈசா (32), வில்பிரட் என்கிற சலீம் ஆகியோர் இஸ்லாத்தைத் தழுவியுள்ளனர். இதில், சலீம் கடந்த 10 வருடங்களுக்கு முன்பே இஸ்லாத்தைத் தழுவியுள்ளார். அப்போது ஒரு சில நெருக்கடி காரணமாக அந்த மீனவ கிராமத்தை விட்டு வெளியேற வேண்டிய கட்டாயத்தால் தற்போது காயல்பட்டினத்தில் வசித்து வருகிறார். ஆனால் சமீபத்தில் முஸ்லீம் மதம் மாறிய இருவருக்கும் அதே எதிர்ப்பு குரல் பலமாக இருந்து வருவதாக கூறப்படுகிறது. மேலும், கொம்புத்துறை மீனவ சங்கத்தினர் கொம்புத்துறை கடற்கரையில் இருந்து கடலுக்கு மீன்பிடிக்க விடாமல் தடுப்பதாகவும் புகார் அளித்துள்ளனர். கொம்புத்துறை மீனவர்களோ இதை மறுக்கின்றனர். ஊர் பெயரை மாற்றியதற்கு எதிர்ப்பு தெரிவித்து கடந்த 20 நாட்களாக மீனவர்கள் கடலுக்கு செல்லாமல் படகுகளை கரையிலேயே நிறுத்தி வைத்து உள்ளனர். அசம்பாவிதங்கள் நடைபெறாத வண்ணம் போலீஸ் பாதுகாப்பும் போடப்பட்டு உள்ளது.

இதுகுறித்து காயல்பட்டிணத்தை சேர்ந்தவர்களிடம் கேட்டபோது, “கடந்த 47 வருடங்களுக்கு முன் கன்னியாகுமரி அருகே உள்ள கடற்கரை கிராமத்தில் இருந்து கடல் தொழிலுக்காக அந்த மக்கள் இங்கு வந்தனர். அவர்களுக்கு இடம் கொடுத்து அப்போது ஆதரவு அளித்தோம். பின்னர், அப்பகுதி மக்கள் தாங்கள் வழிபட ஆலயம் அமைத்தனர். பின்னர், 'கடையக்குடி' என்ற ஊர் பெயரை 'கொம்புதுறை' என்று மாற்றினர். அப்போதும் அதனையும் கண்டு கொள்ளவில்லை. ஆனால் இப்போது அவர்கள் மதத்தில் இருந்து இருவர் எங்கள் மதத்திற்கு வந்துள்ளனர். அதனை பொறுக்க இயலாதவர்கள் வேண்டும் மென்றே ஊர் பெயர் பலகையை காரணம் காட்டி எதிர்ப்பு தெரிவித்து வருகின்றனர். அந்த இருவரும், மீன்பிடி தொழிலை நம்பியே உள்ளனர்.

மதம் மாறியதால் தொழில் செய்ய விடாமல் முட்டுகட்டை போடுகின்றனர் என கூறும் அவர்கள், மீன் தொழில் செய்து வரும் இவர்களது படகை தள்ளி விடுவதற்கு டிராக்டர் பயன்படுத்தபட்டு வருகிறது. இந்த டிராக்டர் கொம்புத்துறை மீனவர் நலச் சங்கத்திற்கு சொந்தமானது என்பதால் டிராக்டர்களை கடலில் தள்ளுவதற்காக வழங்குவதை நிறுத்திவிட்டனர். ஆனால் இந்த டிராக்டர்களை ஐக்கிய ஜமாத் முஸ்லீம் சமூகத்தில் இருந்து ரூ.13 லட்சம் மதிப்பில் புதியதாக வாங்கி கொடுத்தோம். ஆனால், உள்ளூர் மீனவர்கள் அதையும் பயன்படுத்த விடாமல் தடுத்து பிரச்னை செய்து வருகின்றனர். மேலும் மதம் மாறிய மீனவர்களை கடல் தொழிலுக்கு அனுமதித்து வாழ்வாதாரத்தை காக்க வேண்டும் என்கின்றனர்.

இந்த பிரச்சினை குறித்து கொம்புத்துறை மீனவர்கள் கூறும்போது, ”எங்களது ரேசன்கார்டு, ஆதார் கார்டு, மீனவர் அடையாள அட்டை என எல்லாத்திலும் கொம்புத்துறை என்ற பெயரில் தான் இருக்கு, ஆனால் தீர்வையை கடையக்குடி என அதிகாரிகள் தருகின்றனர், பிறப்பு சான்றிதழை ஒரு சில அதிகாரி கொம்புத்துறை என தருகின்றனர். ஆனால் சிலர் பிராக்கட்டில் கொம்புத்துறை, கடையக்குடி எனவும் தருகின்றனர். இது குழந்தைகளின் எதிர்காலத்தை பாதிக்கும் எனக்கூறும் மீனவர்கள், தற்போது ஊர் பெயர் தான் பிரச்னையாக உள்ளது. யாரும் மதம் மாறி போனவர்களை பற்றி கவலைப்படவுமில்லை, மீன்பிடித் தொழிலை மேற்கொள்வதை தடுக்கவுமில்லை.

கிராமத்திற்கு கடையக்குடி என்ற பெயரைப் பயன்படுத்துவதற்கு மட்டுமே நாங்கள் எதிர்ப்பு தெரிவித்து வருகிறோம். ஊரின் பெயர் கொம்புத்துறை என்றே தான் காலம், காலமாக உள்ளது. ஆனால் முஸ்லிம் சமூகத்தினர் கடையக்குடி என்று அழைத்து வருகின்றனர். மதம் மாறிய இவர்கள் படகை தள்ளி விடுவதற்கு முஸ்லீம் சமூகத்தில் இருந்து வழங்கப்பட்ட டிராக்டர்களில் ஊர் பெயரை கடையக்குடி என்று எழுதி வைத்துள்ளனர். இதில் மாவட்ட நிர்வாகம் தலையிட்டு பிரச்சினையை முடிக்க வேண்டும்” என்கின்றனர்.

Myself (Muhammad Frango) and my childhood friend (Eesa @ Jebastian) are fishermen residing in Kadaiyakudi which along with Arunachalapuram, Koman street, Koman Middle street and Koman East street are part of ward #3 of Kayalpatnam Municipality in Thoothukudi district of TamilNadu. Our families and our fellow fishermen, who migrated (allegedly evicted due to communal riots) from Kanniyakumari district to Kayalpatnam Municipality in the 1980s, are practising the Roman Catholic(RC) sect of Christianity.
Within a few years after shifting to Kayalpatnam Municipality, our elders tried to carve out Kadaiyakudi from Kayalpatnam Municipality as a separate fishing town and are trying to rename it as “Kombuthurai” in Government records. A case was registered against them regarding this in Madras High Court – Madurai Branch and the final ruling in 2023 was in favour of “KadaiyaKudi”. In our area, there are three fishermen societies, backed by Christian missionaries from Thoothukudi, who rent tractors to push boats from the shore to the sea. Without a tractor, none can push any boats into the sea. Eesa was the secretary of one such society called “Vinnarisi Meenava Sangam, which is backed by TMSSS – Tuticorin Multipurpose Social Service Society.
In this background, myself and Eesa converted to Islam in 2021 and 2022 respectively based on our own wishes. Irated by our decisions, big-shots of our area threatened us either to leave Kadaiyakudi (as none other than RC Christians can stay here) or to seek forgiveness from the Church. As we stuck to our new faith, to ‘teach us a lesson’, Eesa was expelled from his society, in spite of being the current secretary, on 18-6-2023 stating that only Christians can be part of it and he and his family cannot use the tractor henceforth. Eesa pleaded with them not to ‘punish’ his entire family as except him and his wife all are still practising Christianity but they didn’t heed to him. In parallel, an anti-Muslim syndicate was formed comprising – members of all three fishermen societies, the members of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Kadayakudi and the convicts of the 2007 bomb-making materials smuggling case. The same resolution was passed by other societies also and I was also conveyed the same by them. Hence, it was a complete social-boycott for both of us and our livelihood was blocked from June 2023.
(Note – Some years back, one guy Meno from our area converted to Islam and he was also treated the same way. Eventually, he left Kadaiyakudi and also left the fishing occupation.)
Since Kayalpatnam is a historic Muslim-majoirty town, we approached the federation of all Jamaaths called as “Kayalpatnam Muslim Iykkia Peravai” or “Kayalpatnam United Muslim Council (KUMC)” and informed them about our social-boycott. They reached out to the syndicate and requested to support both of us as it wasn’t correct – morally, religiously and also per the Constitution of India. To which, the fishermen societies replied that as this tractor belongs to missionaries-backed societies, it is accessible only to Christians and they are just following that rule. So, the leaders of KUMC approached fishermen of another fishing area in Kayalpatnam coast and requested them to share their tractor to us on-need basis and they accepted. To our surprise, that tractor also was denied to us the next day. The fisherman who owned that tractor, who is also a Christian, told us that he was asked by seniors of his community and also by my fellow-Kadaiyakudi fishermen that he should not get involved in this dispute for his betterment.
In the meantime, we complained to the Fisheries department of TamilNadu and Thoothukudi Collector office regarding this matter. We were also called by police and Government officials (VAO, Tahsildars) for a peace-meeting. Initially in the meetings, Kadaiyakudi fishermen brazenly told that “Muslims shouldn’t live in our area and we are not responsible if some violence happens“. No officers took action against them and the worst part was some officers also suggested that we could better leave our land and start fishing somewhere else, as the opposite side is very adamant. As we were aware of the rights granted to us by the Constitution of India, we opposed these arguments and told the officials clearly that we are demanding our fundamental rights and we would definitely go to the media and court if proper justice was not given in these meetings. So, the opposite side reduced their tone and said that they won’t harm us and won’t ask us to leave Kadaiyakudi but they cannot share the tractor to us because it was meant for Christians only. Hearing this, KUMC said in the meeting that they can arrange money to purchase a new tractor and gift it to us so that this dispute ends sooner as it’s already more than 2 months without any livelihood.
In September 2023, we were handed-over a new tractor with a caption (“For all communities”‘) by KUMC in Kadaiyakudi in the presence of Government officials. As we were preparing to resume our work in a day or two, we were informed by police that we should not use the tractor until another peace committee meeting headed by RDO, as the opposite side had raised some objections. So, once again there were back-to-back meetings and this time the syndicate’s argument was that ‘Muslim tractor’ is not allowed in Kadaiyakudi. Now, the RDO and other officials understood the real nature of the syndicate and warned about dire consequences for their discriminatory behavior. So, the syndicate agreed and signed before RDO on 6-Oct-23 that they won’t block us from – using the new tractor given to us by KUMC, selling our fishes in the same center where all in Kadaiyakudi are selling.
The very next day, the syndicate declared an indefinite strike stating that there will be a law and order situation in our place because of this ‘Muslim’ tractor. We were once again informed by police to wait until further notice. In the meantime,
1) One-sided/half-baked/misinterpreted story of us (with our names) got published in selected newspapers (few listed below) without any consultation with us:
- a) Dinamalar– right-wing daily’s Nellai edition (refer attachment)
- b) ShreeTV, a youtube channel run by RSS,reported this news in a more derogatory manner (Link to the video – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jo3JQVv_P0)
2) Within few days, the opposite side obtained a stay on the resolution passed by RDO from Madras High Court (Madurai bench)’s Justice G.R Swaminathan whose few judgements have been very controversial.
3) We were repeatedly threatened by Superintendent of Police (Thoothukudi), Deputy Superintendent of Police (Tiruchendur) and one or two Intelligence officers to ‘comply’ with local rules laid by the syndicate, if not, I will be booked falsely (i.e we should not use the new tractor gifted to us and instead these officers will speak to the syndicate to share the tractor which was denied to us for more than 4 months)
4) KUMC was also threatened by Superintendent of Police (Thoothukudi) stating that they are using me and Eesa to a create communal issue (despite knowing the fact that it is a legitimate federation of all groups and Jamaths in Kayalpatnam)
Sensing more trouble, we started reaching out to print and social media to convey our version which is the true one. To our surprise, neither we couldn’t reach the media nor the people who attended our call took our matter seriously, except Mr. Felix Gerald, Editor of RedPix youtube channel. He invited me for a video interview in his office in Chennai and the same was published in his channel in October 2023. Emboldened by the stay order they have received from the court, threat to KUMC by police and the nexus between them and the Superintendent of Police (Thoothukudi), the syndicate openly declared that no rules apply in Kadaiyakudi (Kombuthurai) except their own and our tractor will be attacked the moment we use it. We also have secured a recorded phone call where a member of the syndicate tells that the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Tiruchendur) has promised them that he would arrest me and Eesa when we use the tractor.
Determined to get justice, we met Minister for Fisheries & Fishermen Welfare, Mr. Anitha Radhakrishnan, who is also the MLA of our constituency and sought his help. We understood from his response that he is preferring the opposite side because of the Christian fishermen community vote-bank from Kanniyakumari to the Thoothukudi districts. (Around the time of meeting him, this minister was in the headlines of national media due to the controversies – “chinese rocket” and remarks against the PM).
We also approached an aide of Ms. Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, who is the MP of our constituency but wasn’t helpful.
My wife and my Christian parents and Eesa’s wife and his Christian parents and a physically-challenged elder brother are all longing for an income from us for almost a year. I have sold my boat engine and a few others so far for survival. The hardships we have been facing so far have actually made us very strong, by the mercy of God.
