Dalit man stabbed by Muslim wife's family in Hyderabad

Nagaraju, the victim, had married a Muslim woman, Syed Sultanan, two months ago. His family said they had been in love since college. Since the man and the woman belonged to different religions, her family had killed him, alleged one of his relatives.

A man was stabbed to death by an assailant on a bike at Saroornagar Tehsildar office in Hyderabad on Wednesday, May 4. Police have confirmed that a few of the suspects have been detained, and that they all belong to the girl's family.

Nagaraju (25) was stabbed to death at Saroornagar Tehsildar office at around 9 pm on Wednesday night by an unknown person who was on a bike. The assailant fled the scene. Many passersby recorded the incident on their phones and some even clicked pictures of the dead body. Here is the CCTV footage of the incident.

The incident has created tensions in the area after Nagaraju's relatives held a protest and alleged that his wife’s family was behind the murder. Nagaraju had married 23-year-old Syed Ashrin Sultana (a.k.a Pallavi), two months ago, on January 31.

Saroornagar Police arrested Syed Sultanan's brother Syed Mobin Ahmed and one Mohammed Masood Ahmed for their involvement in the murder.

“They [Sultana and Nagaraju] were both in love from their college days. They got married at Arya Samaj mandir of the Old City two months ago. Since they belonged to different religions, her family killed the boy,” alleged one of Nagraj’s relatives.

According to police, the accused developed a grudge against the deceased, as he had married the sister of one of the accused. The accused then hatched a plan and brutally murdered the deceased by beating him with an iron rod indiscriminately and stabbing him with a knife.

One month ago, the accused tried to locate the deceased, but failed to identify his location. On May 6, the accused followed the deceased on their scooter and found Nagaraju at Panjala Anil kumar colony, Saroornagar. They stopped Nagaraju and murdered him with an iron rod and a knife.

Nagaraju was a resident of Marredpally, Secunderabad and he was working as a salesman in a popular car showroom in Malakpet in the Old City. After the incident, the BJP staged a protest demanding justice and the arrest of the killers.

Telangana BJP MLA Raja Singh has called for the arrest of everyone involved in the planning and execution of the murder. "Was it the family members, or did some religious groups advise the family? Did some group promise them financial help? There should be a full-fledged inquiry into this murder."

BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala took to Twitter to comment on the issue. He said, "Had a Muslim husband of a Hindu wife been killed by her family we know what would happen by now! Congress,AAP,TMC,SP would have reached United Nations alleging ISLAMOPHOBIA. But since Hindu has been killed & in Hyderabad - the crime is secular? Hence secular chupp"

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Sridhar Reddy, said that the initial investigation suggested that their love marriage was the reason behind the killing.
